What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a system used to align or straighten teeth using a series of clear aligner trays custom created for each patient. Each tray in the series moves your teeth progressively toward a straighter position, in a planned sequence, until treatment is complete. This alternative to traditional braces can address a range of alignment concerns. Our dental team will assess your situation and discuss whether Invisalign may be suitable for you.
How it Works
Dental veneers are dental restorations made of wafer-thin coverings that are custom made for teeth. They look and feel like natural teeth but are only placed onto the front as a cosmetic fix. However, because they cover the whole teeth, they can also add strength and resilience to teeth that are mildly damaged and can help prevent further damage.
When you come to see us for teeth alignment or straightening, we will perform a dental examination and evaluation to properly assess your situation. If we identify any unresolved dental concerns, we can discuss addressing these first. We then collect the data needed for your Invisalign treatment with the following steps:
After your initial assessment, we will take x-rays, 3D scans, photos and videos, and collect any other data needed to plan your treatment. We can give you an indication of the projected process at this stage.
Your data will be sent to the Invisalign lab and we will bring you back for your personalised ClinCheck®, where you can see the projected movements of your teeth throughout treatment. During this stage we can also determine if attachments may be needed for your Invisalign trays.
Once your ClinCheck is approved, your first set of aligners will be created and sent.
When we receive your aligners, we will schedule a visit to fit your first tray, provide your customised instructions and answer any questions you may have.
You will wear each tray at least 22 hours every day, removing them only for eating and cleaning.
Each tray is typically worn for approximately one week, though you will be given specific instructions for your situation.

The aligners are clear and largely unnoticeable during everyday activities. They can also be removed when needed, making them more convenient than traditional braces for many patients. Treatment may take from 6 to 24 months depending on the extent of alignment concern. Once complete, you will need to wear a retainer to help keep your teeth in position. Your dentist will discuss your retention plan.
Our dental team will monitor your progress throughout treatment to assess whether your teeth are moving as planned. If adjustments are needed, we will discuss these with you as treatment progresses.
Invisalign Technology
Invisalign is a well-established clear aligner system and a modern alternative to traditional metal braces. With diagnostic tools including 3D scanning, digital x-rays and 3D treatment planning software, we can create a personalised Invisalign treatment plan for each patient.
Your customised trays are created using SmartTrack® material, designed to apply a gentle and consistent force for controlled teeth movement. The flexible plastic material is specifically engineered for orthodontic treatment and is 100% BPA free.
SmartForce® attachments are made of composite resin and may be used to support your treatment where required. They are designed to address more specific concerns relating to the size, shape or angle of individual teeth, helping to ensure force is applied in the appropriate location and direction.
SmartForce attachments are small, often fitting just inside the aligner tray. Each piece varies in shape and size and is specific to each patient. Not every patient requires attachments, and if you do, they will be tailored to your individual situation.
Am I a Candidate for Invisalign?
Invisalign can be used to address a range of alignment concerns, including more complex tooth movements. The following are examples of concerns that may be addressed with Invisalign:
Crooked teeth, including more complex situations
Overbites, underbites and crossbites
Some patients with narrow arches
Gaps between teeth
We discuss Invisalign with adults, teenagers and some children. Keep in mind the trays need to be worn for at least 22 hours each day, which may not suit all patients. Suitability is assessed on a case-by-case basis.
In some cases, one or two teeth may require removal to create sufficient space for alignment. We evaluate each patient individually and will discuss all relevant options with you.
