Orthodontic Braces Sydney
Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that helps improve alignment of teeth. Straight teeth can greatly improve a smile, but there are other benefits as well, including improved overall oral health.
Our team of dental professionals here at Pitt Street Dental Centre in Sydney CBD is passionate about improving our patients’ oral health. When you visit us for orthodontic treatments, you will get professional, friendly and premium quality services.
Who Needs Orthodontics?
The main treatment concern in orthodontics is straightening teeth through the use of braces and clear aligners. Today’s technology in dentistry has advanced and braces are not what they used to be. Today’s braces are low-profile devices that can treat moderate to severe malocclusions, improper bites and palate width.
Children, teenagers and adults are patients for orthodontics because straighter teeth can improve your smile and oral health. The following dental issues are commonly treated with orthodontics:
Crooked and crowded teeth
Improper teeth placement
Underbites, overbites and crossbites
Jaw joint disorders
Misaligned jaw
Palate issues
The Benefits of Straight Teeth
Straight teeth improve oral health while crooked teeth or improper teeth positioning can interfere with your daily life, including how you eat and talk. Crooked teeth can increase your risk for gum disease and tooth infection or decay because there are more nooks and crannies for food debris to hide.
Improperly aligned teeth and jaw can lead to bruxism (teeth grinding) and damage teeth. Orthodontics is the ideal solution to improve your teeth positioning and alignment, so you can take advantage of the benefits of straight teeth, including:
Brushing and flossing are easier with straight teeth
Less room for food debris and harmful bacteria to hide
Lessen risk of jaw problems and reduce jaw pain with proper alignment
Improved ability to chew your food
Improved speech
Protect teeth from future damage such as breaking and cracking
Reduce bad breath from hidden food debris
Reduce risk of teeth grinding

Brace
Braces are the traditional solution to fix teeth that are misaligned or crooked. They may be made of metal, ceramic for a lower profile and coloured bands for a bit of self-expression. Braces are placed onto the teeth with brackets and wires are used to adjust the brackets, which will move the teeth into place. Elastic bands, springs and other attachments are used to help control movement for a precise and individualised result.
Headgear
Headgear may be used by some patients along with braces. This solution is for severely crooked teeth or may be used to improve an underbite or overbite.
Palatal expansion
Palatal expansion is a solution for children with a narrow arch in the upper palate. A narrow arch means less room for teeth and can often result in crooked and crowded teeth that are difficult to keep clean. Palatal expansion is an ideal treatment to help children’s teeth fit together properly. Because the bones of adults are set in place, they may not be able to take advantage of this dental solution, but we can do an evaluation to determine if this solution or another would help.
Types of Braces
Metal braces
Metal braces are the tradition solution to straighten teeth. Today’s braces are much less noticeable with smaller brackets that keep a lower profile. These will need to be adjusted about every four weeks to help move teeth into position. You will be given instructions for foods to avoid and how to clean your braces to keep your teeth healthy and fresh.
Lingual braces
Lingual braces use similar components to traditional braces, but are applied to only the backside of teeth for an even more invisible treatment. They are ideal for patients who want a practically unnoticeable treatment such as working professionals. They may interfere with speech but most patients adjust quickly.
Ceramic braces
Ceramic braces are sometimes called clear braces because the material used is a tooth-coloured ceramic instead of metal. These braces require more adjustments and so treatment time may take longer. These braces are great for patients who want a less obvious treatment than metal braces.
Invisalign
Invisalign Clear Aligners is an option for a low profile treatment, and while they are not truly braces, they do effectively straighten teeth. This system uses a series of clear aligner trays that are each worn for a short time before moving on to the next. Each tray gradually moves teeth closer to their ideal position, and when the treatment is complete your new smile is complete. Our team of professional dentists oversee the Invisalign treatment to ensure your progress goes as planned.
