Hi, Dr. Michael Cai here from Pitt Street Dental Centre in Sydney CBD.
Have you ever taken a bite of something sweet and felt a sharp, zinging pain in your teeth? That’s not normal, and it’s your teeth trying to tell you something!
There are two main reasons why sugar can trigger tooth sensitivity. The first is dental wear. Things like erosion, abrasion, or small fractures that expose the dentine underneath your enamel. This layer contains tiny nerve channels, so when sugar hits, it can stimulate the nerve, causing sensitivity or pain.
The second reason? Cavities. If you’ve got untreated decay, sugar can seep into those weakened areas, leading to that uncomfortable, sensitive feeling.
So what’s the key takeaway? If sweets are causing sensitivity, it’s time for a check-up. Catching the problem early means we can treat the underlying issue before it gets worse.
