Importance of Tooth Structure Preservation in Doing Dental Veneers
Hi, I’m Dr Michael Cai, one of the dentists here at Pitt St Dental Centre in Sydney CBD.
We saw a new cosmetic patient, Jenny from Kirrbilli, this morning. After following our Instagram for a while and seeing our before and after photos, she decided to come in to see us about her smile.
She is interested in getting porcelain veneers, but she has seen on social media how some dentists shave many teeth off, which really scared her. I explained to her the importance of tooth structure preservation in doing Dental Veneers. After this, she felt so much more relieved.
This got me thinking. Every dentist and every practice has different philosophies when it comes to tooth structure preservation. So I thought I’ll make a quick video sharing with you what our perspectives are here at Pitt St Dental Centre regarding tooth structure preservation.
Firstly, let’s define what dental veneers are. Veneers are thin shells placed over the front surface of your teeth to improve their appearance. They can be used to address a variety of cosmetic concerns, such as size, chips, cracks, discolouration, and misalignment.
Preparing the teeth for veneers involves modification of the tooth structure. However, the importance of preserving as much of the natural tooth structure as possible when doing dental veneers is often overlooked.
Too much enamel removal can compromise the tooth’s structural integrity and make it more susceptible to sensitivity, decay, fracture, and other problems.
The strength of porcelain veneers comes from bonding the veneers to the underlying tooth structure. Conserving enamel means the veneers are also strong and long-lasting.
So, what can you do to preserve tooth structure when considering dental veneers? One option is to choose a dentist who is experienced and skilled in the process of minimally invasive veneers. This involves using techniques and materials that require less enamel removal while still achieving beautiful and natural-looking results.
At Pitt St Dental Centre, we use digital smile design planning for all our veneer cases. In addition, a veneer preparation guide is always used to ensure minimal tooth structure modification to preserve the maximum amount of tooth structure.
So to wrap up, it is essential to preserve as much of the natural tooth structure as possible is crucial when it comes to dental veneers. By doing so, we can help ensure your teeth’ long-term health and stability while still achieving the beautiful, confident smile you’ve always wanted.
I hope I have given you a better insight into our philosophy regarding tooth structure preservation. If you like our approach and are looking at upgrading your smile with porcelain veneers, we would love to look after you.
