How to Manage Severe Tooth Pain Until You See a Dentist
Tooth pain can be intense and disruptive, making it hard to eat, sleep, or focus on anything else. If you’re experiencing severe discomfort, you’ll want fast relief while waiting for your dental appointment.
At Pitt Street Dental Centre in Sydney CBD, we understand how urgent dental pain can be. Here’s what you can do to ease the pain in the meantime and protect your tooth until you see your dentist.
1. Identify the Source of the Pain
- Pain from the Gum – If the pain feels like it’s coming from your gums, it could be due to an infection, swelling, or food trapped under the gumline.
- Pain from the Tooth – If the pain feels deep, sharp, or throbbing, it’s likely coming from the tooth’s nerve. This could indicate decay, infection, or damage to the tooth.
2. Rinse with a Warm Saltwater or Antiseptic Mouthwash
- For Gum Pain – A warm saltwater rinse (1 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water) can help reduce swelling and flush out bacteria.
- For General Discomfort – An antiseptic mouthwash can help minimise infection and irritation in the area.
3. Take Over-the-Counter Pain Relief
- Pain Relief – Taking painkillers as directed can help reduce inflammation and discomfort while you wait for treatment.
- Avoid Applying Aspirin Directly to the Tooth – This does not work and can burn your gums, making the situation worse.

4. Avoid Triggers That Can Worsen Pain
- Hot & Cold Foods – Extreme temperatures can increase sensitivity and make pain worse.
- Sugary or Acidic Foods – These can irritate an already sensitive tooth.
- Chewing on the Affected Side – Avoid putting pressure on the painful tooth until your dentist evaluates it.
5. Apply a Cold Compress for Swelling
- If your face is swollen, place a cold pack or wrapped ice pack on the outside of your cheek for 10–15 minutes at a time to reduce inflammation.
6. Don’t Ignore the Pain—See a Dentist ASAP
Tooth pain is a sign that something isn’t right. Delaying treatment can lead to more serious complications, including infections or abscesses.
At Pitt Street Dental Centre, we prioritise emergency dental cases and will do our best to see you as quickly as possible.
