Is Dental Veneer Procedure Painful?
Hi, I’m Dr Michael Cai, the principal dentist of Pitt St Dental Centre here in Sydney CBD.
We are about to start another cosmetic patient, Elly from Mosman, with her smile makeover journey with 10 porcelain veneers.
She was very excited about getting the smile she had always wanted, but she was also a bit apprehensive. So during our smile design appointment, she said to me, Hey Michael, I’m really excited about this, but I’m also a bit scared, is the procedure going to hurt? Is it painful?
It is a very valid question! So I thought I’d make a video sharing with you what I shared with her.
First of all, let me reassure you that the veneer procedure is not painful and well tolerated. Before the procedure begins, we will numb the area with numbing cream followed by a local anaesthetic, so you won’t feel any pain during the veneer preparation process.
After your teeth have been prepared, we will use a high-tech intraoral scanner to scan your dentition to create your veneers. This is much more comfortable compared to the traditional silicone impression. Finally, we will place a desensitising medication on your prepared teeth and make your temporary veneers; so not only will you look great, and it also reduces any chance of discomfort or post-operative sensitivity.
During your veneer fitting appointment, we will ensure you are comfortable and numb before removing your temporary veneers and carefully bond your new veneers to the front surface of your teeth. This step feels like your dental hygiene cleaning, and it is not painful at all.
After the veneers are in place, you may experience mild sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures for a few days. This is normal and should subside on its own. We will also recommend avoiding certain foods and beverages for a few days to allow your gums and teeth to adjust to the new veneers.
To summarise, the dental veneer procedure is not painful. We will numb the area around your teeth with a local anaesthetic, and the procedure is generally painless. Any discomfort or sensitivity you may experience during or after the procedure is typically mild and temporary. For people with dental anxiety, we can give you oral sedation medications to make you more relaxed. It is also possible to have the procedure completed with IV sedation so you can sleep through it.
