3 Causes of a Toothache
Last Tuesday, our new patient, Jennifer, from Pyrmont, visited our clinic. Her right tooth had been aching for a few days and has been very uncomfortable. During our consultation, she asked me, Kim, what causes a toothache?
I get asked this question quite often. So I decided to record this short video and discuss the three most common causes of a toothache.
The first one is from gum disease. People can get an abscess in the gum and it can be quite painful. This also includes wisdom tooth infection; this is when the gum is infected around the wisdom teeth. Now, treatment for a gum infection requires a professional clean, by removing the plaque and bacteria that causes the infection. In addition to having gum treatment, painkillers and antibiotics can be prescribed. The most important part is having a structured maintenance program to keep your gums healthy so it doesn’t happen again.
If that happens, then the tooth possibly needs to have filling or crown. In some cases, root canal therapy or extraction is required if the tooth can’t be fixed.
The longer this is delayed, the worst prognosis is. We want to save as many of your teeth as possible.
