3 Causes of a Toothache

People Asked:
What causes a toothache?

The three most common causes of a toothache are gum disease (including wisdom tooth infections), dental decay or tooth fractures that lead to nerve inflammation, and physical trauma from injuries or accidents.

Hi, I’m Dr Kim Nguyen, one of the dentists at Pitt St Dental Centre here in Sydney CBD.

Last Tuesday, our new patient, Jennifer, from Pyrmont, visited our clinic. Her right tooth had been aching for a few days and has been very uncomfortable.

The first one is from gum disease. People can get an abscess in the gum and it can be quite painful. This also includes wisdom tooth infection; this is when the gum is infected around the wisdom teeth. Now, treatment for a gum infection requires a professional clean, by removing the plaque and bacteria that causes the infection. In addition to having gum treatment, painkillers and antibiotics can be prescribed. The most important part is having a structured maintenance program to keep your gums healthy so it doesn’t happen again.

The second main cause of a toothache comes from dental decay or tooth fracture that leads to an infection or inflammation of the nerve. If that happens, then the tooth possibly needs to have filling or crown. In some cases, root canal therapy or extraction is required if the tooth can’t be fixed.

The third cause is trauma. This can happen from an injury, a fall, or an accident. If this happens, it is best to see a dentist straight away so we can manage you immediately. The longer this is delayed, the worst prognosis is. We want to save as many of your teeth as possible.

If you’ve been noticing pain and discomfort with your teeth or gums, we can definitely look after you and help you find the cause of it.

Simply call us on +61 2 8000 1832, complete the booking form on our website, or send us a DM on social media, and we’ll be in touch to help you organise your consultation. See you soon.
